Teaching Credentialing

General Guidance: Helpful Tips

Teaching Credentialing Curriculum

The “No Child left behind” law, passed by the US congress, and up for renewal this year, has mandated certain requirements on those planning to teach in US public schools. Many private schools are now also requiring an official credentialing certification.

Many applicants have a misconception of the credentialing program. To apply for a credentialing program the basic requirement is that you posses at a minimum the equivalent of a US Bachelor’s degree. (Possession of a higher level of education, e.g. Master, or a Ph. D. does not grant you any special privileges). The intent of the credentialing program is to teach you “how to teach”, not necessarily “what to teach”, hence a higher level of education in a particular subject matter has lower relevance in this case.

Subject matter expertise is tested at a different level. Where subject mater expertise might be beneficial to you is in the testing phases such as in California: CBEST (California Basic Education Subject Test), CSET (California Subject Expertise Test).
